More Independence and Flexibility to Create

by | Apr 19, 2021

As we discuss in the the Grant Info section, the maximum grant we award to an artist in a grant cycle is $5,000. So, our grants are small compared to what larger non-profits and foundations may offer. But it's wonderful to see the large impact it can have on an artist's practice. Maria Rios Mathioudakis discusses all that she was able to do with the grant she received in 2019:

I asked for funding from the William Male Foundation in order to purchase the equipment necessary to build a stronger studio and socially engaged art practice. I needed support in both creating a business for myself (photobooth studio) and growing my free art workshops. I used the funding I received to purchase an incredible amount of digital media equipment (flash system, studio backdrop system, digital instant camera, photo printer, etc.) from B&H. I selected lots of portable equipment in order to grow the scope of the free pop-up photo-workshops I teach in underserved San Diego communities. Having my own equipment to lead my workshops has allowed me a level of independence I have never had. Previously I borrowed equipment from local institutions or borrowed crowd-source equipment. Now I have the ability to build projects with communities on my own timeline and with the best possible equipment. In 2020 I plan to use the equipment I received through my William Male Foundation funding to create pop-up photo booths at Barrio Logan Art Crawl events and at Chicano Park Day. I am also planning a collaboration with the 8th Grade Class at Vallecitos Elementary School in Rainbow. Thank you for helping me to continue using my photography as a means of making a positive impact.
