Bryan Ali Sanchez was born in San Diego, California. He earned an M.F.A. in Painting and Printmaking from Yale University School of Art, New Haven, CT (2023), a B.F.A. from California State University Long Beach, Long Beach, CA (2019), and an A.A. from San Diego City College, San Diego, CA (2016).
Through his bold interplay of vivid colors and heavy brushstrokes, Sanchez (b.1989) creates narrative paintings that address the psychological effects and hardships of the working class. Sanchez explores moments between stillness and tension, the emotional involvement among people, animals, and the landscape, enduring labor, and concepts of space and time. His practice engages in a dialogue between past and present, revealing multiple understandings of his experience that reflect each other through family history and childhood along the U.S.-Mexico border.
His recent solo exhibitions include Solo Booth, Baert Gallery at EXPO CHICAGO, Chicago, IL (2025); Recuerdos del Horizonte, Baert Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2025); and Siempre Presente / Ever-Present, Albert Projects, Los Angeles, CA (2024). Group exhibitions include A Breath on the Glass, Spurs Galley, Beijing, China (2023); A Signal Urgent But Breaking, Perrotin Gallery, New York City, NY (2023); It’s Not The Heat, It’s The Dust, GROVE, London, UK (2023) and Otra Noche en LA, VETA Galería, Madrid, Spain (2023). Sanchez is the recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant (2024 & 2022) and the Richard Welling Scholarship from Yale University School of Art (2021).
