Maricar Camaya is a San Diego-based filmmaker who has created short documentaries, promotional, and educational videos for a number of local non-profit and grassroots organizations, including the Immigration Justice Project San Diego, Youth Empowerment Synergy San Diego, and the Media Arts Center San Diego. *Siya received a special commendation from the City of San Diego’s Human Relations Commission in 2012 for documentary work and community service and completed a Master of Arts from UC Santa Cruz’s Social Documentation program in 2016. Siya has continued storytelling as a freelance videographer/editor and as a library associate for the Chula Vista public library system, reading stories to children 0-5 years old. Maricar’s community involvements and films often center around Asian Americans and queer and trans people of color, and siya is inspired by stories that thoughtfully reflect the experiences of communities and individuals not regularly shown in mainstream visual media.
